Abstract
IT is well known that adipocytes with specific cell-membrane insulin receptors respond to insulin by increasing glucose uptake, oxidation and lipogenesis in the presence of glucose1–4. Maintenance of adipocyte insulin sensitivity during a state of relative muscle cell insulin resistance has been considered a possible mechanism for obesity in diabetes mellitus5. I now report that a distinct cell phenotype resists insulin but accumulates lipid in response to corticosteroid. Furthermore, corti-costeroid-induced lipogenesis is significantly greater in marrow preadipocytes of mutant diabetic-obese mice.
