    These bioscaffolds were shown to promote local recruitment of perivascular stem cells with downstream formation of new functional skeletal muscle. In a second example, acellular dermal matrix has been popularly used in implant-based breast reconstruction [18-20] and has been shown to revascularize, recellularize, remodel, and integrate into host tissue in a primate model of abdominal wall repair [21]. A third example of in situ TE with naturally occurring materials involved the use of a hydrogel form of ECM.

    The prolonged degradation of D-ECM is consistent with clinical reports. Histologic examination of Strattice™ (porcine dermal ECM) used in breast reconstruction showed a minimally degraded scaffold at 6 weeks and a fully integrated scaffold by two years [38,39]. The difference in degradation between D-ECM and SIS-ECM can be attributed to a number of factors, including the composition and ultrastructure of the ECM, the amount of cell infiltration, and processing method.

    To this end, contradictory results have been shown in the literature. Whilst graft encapsulation and inflammatory reactions are described by using xenogenic matrices, Xu et al. revealed the ability of porcine-derived acellular dermal scaffolds to remodel and integrate into host tissue and support soft-tissue regeneration in several studies.20,31,32 Strattice™ is described to be a porcine-derived dermal matrix completely de-cellularised but with the three-dimensional structure preserved in the scaffold.
