An orthopantomographic study of developmental mandibular bone defects (Stafne's idiopathic bone cavities)

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate, on the basis of radiographs, the prevalence and special characteristics of developmental bone defects near the angle of the mandible among an adult population. Ten bone defects were observed in the 10,000 orthopantomograms studied, i.e. a prevalence of one per thousand in the total material. All defects were unilateral and occurred in men only. The mean age was 54 years and the age range 19 to 72 years. The diameter of the defects ranged from 8 to 22 mm, mean 12.8 mm. The largest cavities were seen in the oldest individuals of the series. In eight of the 10 cases the defect was above the inferior border of the mandible. One patient was followed-up for 3 years, and during this time neither the size nor the shape of the defect on the radiograph was seen to have changed.

    In a Japanese study that examined 42,600 consecutive panoramic radiographs, 69 SBCs were diagnosed, of which, 65 cases were of the posterior type (prevalence, 0.15%), and 4 were of the more anterior type (prevalence, 0.009%) (4). Also demonstrating the low prevalence of SBC, Oikarinen and Julku (7) reported finding only 10 suspected SBCs in 10,000 orthopantomograms. Most patients with SBC are from 40–60 years of age (4), with no report of a patient with a suspected SBC who was younger than 11 years of age (8).
