These factors include but are not limited to: (1) ovulation not being a one-time event but rather a period of a few hours (Almeida et al., 2000), (2) variations in the total length of the sexual cycle as well as in (3) the length of the individual periods of the sexual cycle due to influences, such as farm-specificity, breed, and parity (Soede and Kemp, 1997). Based on the physiological conditions in the female reproductive tract and to achieve the best possible results, insemination should ideally be performed between 12 hours before (Bortolozzo et al., 2005) and 4 hours after (Nissen et al., 1997) ovulation.

Protocols for inseminations timed to estrus detection have been developed with the aim of reducing the number of inseminations that have to be performed and to have the inseminations done in the window in which there is the highest fertilization rate, i.e., during the 24 hours before ovulation.
