Radioprotective effect of orally administered beta-D-glucan derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae
2018, International Journal of Biological MacromoleculesCitation Excerpt :As for beta-d-glucan derived from S. cerevisiae, researches focused on its anti-tumor and immune-enhancing activities in vitro and in vivo [12–16], but the study of radioprotective activity is relatively limited. Earlier report suggested that S. cerevisiae-derived beta-d-glucan (S. cerevisiae-BG) enhanced hematopoietic recovery in IR-damaged mice, as assessed by basic hematological parameters like spleen weight, bone marrow cellularity, or peripheral blood granulocyte counts [17–21]. Later studies have confirmed the ability of S. cerevisiae-BG to stimulate hematopoiesis and enhance survival in radiation-exposed animals [4].
Biological activities of derivatized D-glucans: A review
2014, International Journal of Biological MacromoleculesCitation Excerpt :Immunomodulating effects mediated by β-glucans were first recognized in the mid-1980s in Japan [118–121]. In addition, other important activities mediated by β-glucans include: stimulation of hematopoiesis [122], hepatoprotective activity in a model of cytotoxicity by radiation [123], reversal of myelosuppression induced by chemotherapeutic drugs [124], improved immune response to infection by bacteria (Streptococcus suis) [125], yeasts (Candida albicans); [126] and protozoa (Leishmania donovani; [127], Leishmania major [128], and Toxoplasma gondii [129]. One of the main problems related to the characterization of specific activities in different natural products, such as in some varieties of glucan subtypes, has been the great diversity of their sources, and the possible venues of action contributing to various biological activities.
