The novel SOD mimetic GC4419 increases cancer cell killing with sensitization to ionizing radiation while protecting normal cells
2020, Free Radical Biology and MedicineCitation Excerpt :Enhanced dismutation of O2•− with its scavenging and conversion to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) could thus impair the process of mitosis in cancer cells. Furthermore, the H2O2 produced could be cytotoxic to the tumor cells, as it has also been reported that cancer cells have increased susceptibly to H2O2–mediated injury [66,67]. This could be explained by a reduction in catalase or other peroxidase levels and activity in lung cancer cells compared to normal cells.
Disulfiram causes selective hypoxic cancer cell toxicity and radio-chemo-sensitization via redox cycling of copper
2020, Free Radical Biology and MedicineAugmentation of intracellular iron using iron sucrose enhances the toxicity of pharmacological ascorbate in colon cancer cells
2018, Redox BiologyCitation Excerpt :Cells were sonicated to break open the cells, and protein concentrations of the samples were determined using the Lowry Assay [22]. Catalase activity was determined at 25 °C according to the method of Beers and Sizer with the analysis of Aebi [23–25]. Briefly, 80 μL of samples were added to 4,0 mL phosphate buffer, mixed, and separated into two quartz cuvettes, blank and active.
Alterations of cellular redox homeostasis in cultured fibroblast-like renal cells upon exposure to low doses of cytochrome bc<inf>1</inf> complex inhibitor kresoxim-methyl
2016, Biochemical PharmacologyCitation Excerpt :Catalase is an intracellular antioxidant enzyme, which catalyzes the reaction of H2O2 to water and molecular oxygen and is mainly located in cellular peroxisomes and to some extent in the cytosol [87]. However, the regulation of catalase expression under oxidative stress is unpredictable, as multiple studies on renal tissue report catalase protein, activity or mRNA to decrease [88–91], increase [92,93], or remain unchanged [94] during oxidative stress. Although regulation of catalase is ambiguous, in this study, decreased specific activity of catalase could be more easily explained as inhibition by ROS attack.
